What is a Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner?
A Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Practitioner is a trained professional who works with children and families to understand why behaviours are happening and how to support the child in a safe, respectful, and effective way.
Rather than focusing on stopping behaviour, PBS focuses on:
-
understanding the underlying cause
-
teaching new skills
-
creating supportive environments
-
reducing stress and overwhelm
A PBS Practitioner will:
-
observe and assess your child’s behaviour
-
identify triggers and patterns
-
understand what your child is communicating through behaviour
-
develop a personalised support plan
-
work alongside families and schools to implement strategies
-
The goal is not just short-term change — it’s long-term, meaningful improvement.
What does this actually involve?
Positive Behaviour Support can help with a wide range of behaviours, including:
-
emotional outbursts or meltdowns
-
difficulty with transitions
-
refusal or avoidance
-
anxiety-related behaviours
-
aggression or unsafe behaviours
-
challenges with focus, regulation, or engagement
-
social difficulties
These behaviours are not seen as “problems” — they are understood as communication and unmet needs.
What behaviours can be supported?
Support is tailored to your child and may include:
-
behaviour assessments and observations
-
personalised behaviour support plans
-
strategies for home and school
-
parent coaching and guidance
-
support with emotional regulation
-
teaching replacement skills (e.g. communication, coping strategies)
-
collaboration with teachers and other professionals
What types of supports are provided?
As part of this service, we are also able to develop clear, professional documentation to support your child across settings.
This may include:
-
Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBA)
-
Behaviour Support Plans (draft and final versions)
-
progress reports and review summaries
-
data tracking and outcome monitoring
-
documentation to support school collaboration
-
reports aligned with NDIS requirements (once registered)
These documents help ensure that everyone supporting your child is working consistently and effectively, with clear strategies in place.
Professional documentation & reports
While tutoring focuses on:
-
literacy and numeracy skills
-
academic confidence
-
engagement in learning
Positive Behaviour Support focuses on:
-
behaviour and emotional regulation
-
understanding underlying needs
-
building coping and communication skills
-
supporting daily functioning across environments
Both services can work together — but they serve different purposes.
How this is different to tutoring...
When behaviour is understood and supported properly, children are more likely to:
-
feel calmer and more secure
-
communicate their needs more effectively
-
engage more successfully at home and school
-
build independence over time
Why this matters
This service will be NDIS registered, with full services launching soon.
We are currently:
-
taking expressions of interest and enquiries
-
offering early conversations with families
-
building waitlists ahead of registration
