School Readiness Program

Our School Readiness Program is designed to support children in developing the practical, emotional, and learning skills needed for a smooth and confident transition into school.

This is more than preparing for academics — it’s about helping your child feel capable, independent, and ready to manage the everyday expectations of a classroom environment.

What the Program involves:

Drawing on early years expertise, the program focuses on the key areas that underpin a successful start to school:

  • early literacy and numeracy foundations

  • following instructions and structured routines

  • transitioning between activities

  • building independence within a learning environment

  • participating confidently in group-based settings

Each session is intentionally structured to reflect the expectations children will experience in a classroom, while still being supportive and developmentally appropriate.

A significant part of school readiness is a child’s ability to confidently manage the everyday demands of a classroom.

Within sessions, children are supported to develop skills such as:

  • recognising and writing their name (including correct letter formation)

  • using classroom materials with confidence and control

  • managing tasks that require fine motor coordination

  • following multi-step instructions independently

  • starting and completing tasks with increasing independence

  • understanding how to appropriately seek help when needed

We also gently support children to build confidence around communicating their needs — particularly in new environments where children may feel unsure or hesitant.

For some children, this includes learning simple, practical strategies to:

  • ask for help

  • communicate when they need a break

  • express personal needs confidently in a classroom setting

These skills are introduced in a safe, supportive environment, so children feel comfortable practising them before entering a school setting.

Practical Independence Skills

Many of these skills can absolutely be introduced at home — and parent involvement is incredibly valuable.

However, what often makes the difference is how these skills are taught, structured, and reinforced.

With an early years teaching background, this program is designed to:

  • introduce skills in a developmentally appropriate sequence

  • break tasks down into the exact steps children need to succeed

  • provide the right balance of support and independence

  • recognise when a child is becoming overwhelmed and adjust in the moment

  • build skills in a way that becomes consistent and transferable into the classroom

Children also tend to respond differently in a structured learning environment, where expectations, routines, and supports mirror what they will experience at school.

This allows them to practise and internalise these skills in a way that is often difficult to replicate in everyday home routines.

Why guided support makes a difference...

We understand that starting school can feel overwhelming, particularly for children who process, learn, or respond differently.

Our approach ensures that children are supported through:

  • predictable routines that reduce uncertainty

  • gradual transitions to build comfort and confidence

  • flexible pacing to prevent overwhelm

  • sensory-aware activities (movement, hands-on learning, breaks)

  • responsive support for emotional regulation

  • teaching approaches tailored to each child’s learning profile

Our Approach at Drafting Minds...

A key strength of this program is that the skills children develop do not stay within the session — they carry over into everyday routines at home.

As children build confidence and independence, families often notice improvements in:

  • smoother daily routines

  • increased independence with everyday tasks

  • reduced stress around transitions

  • improved ability to follow instructions

This naturally supports better time management for the whole family, helping mornings, after-school routines, and everyday tasks feel more manageable.

Transfering into everyday life...

We understand that every family’s needs are different.

This program can be accessed in a way that works for you:

  • as a once-off session, for families who are short on time, want a clear starting point, or would prefer guided support rather than figuring it out alone

  • as part of a short-term or ongoing membership, for children who benefit from consistency and repetition

  • as a way to gain a clearer understanding of where your child is currently at and what they need next

There is no pressure — just support where and when you need it.

Flexible ways to access the program...

Children who complete the program are more likely to begin school feeling:

  • confident managing classroom expectations

  • comfortable participating in learning

  • able to communicate their needs

  • independent in everyday routines

  • secure in navigating a new environment

The outcome...

What makes this program is different...

While many children are introduced to these skills at home, they do not always have the structured, consistent, and professionally guided practice needed for these skills to become automatic and transferable into a classroom setting.

This program bridges that gap.

Because when children feel confident in both the learning and the everyday expectations of school, they are far more prepared to settle, engage, and succeed.
